Job Overview

Our client, a well-established engineering and manufacturing company based in Harlow, is seeking an experienced Manual Lathe Machinist to join their team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist with a strong mechanical background and experience operating manual lathes to produce high-quality precision components. The successful candidate will work with a range of materials, including plastics and metals, while ensuring all components meet required specifications and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate manual lathes to manufacture precision components.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate machinery to meet production requirements.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and CAD models.
  • Select appropriate tooling and machining methods for each job.
  • Carry out turning, grinding, milling, and assembly tasks as required.
  • Use hand tools and power tools effectively.
  • Inspect completed components using measuring equipment, including verniers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Ensure all work meets quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Identify and resolve machining issues where required.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
  • Follow all company health and safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Previous experience operating manual lathes within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles and processes.
  • Experience working from engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Competent using measuring equipment such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Experience with grinding, milling, and general workshop practices.
  • Good mechanical knowledge of tooling, fixtures, and machine operation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a proactive approach.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with both metal and plastic components.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM systems, CAD models, or SolidWorks.
  • Experience in precision engineering environments.
