Job Opportunity: Multi-Skilled Engineer (Mechanical/Electrical Bias)

Location: Sedgefield, County Durham
Salary: Starting from £41,714, rising to £45,034 (subject to skills and experience)
Shifts: 24/7 rotating shift pattern (3 on – 3 off, days and nights, 7am-7pm / 7pm-7am)


About the Role

A fantastic opportunity has become available for a Multi-Skilled Engineer to join a busy, well-established manufacturing business producing plastic packaging for the food industry. This role plays a key part in supporting production through effective maintenance, fault finding, and continuous improvement initiatives.

We are seeking a flexible, driven individual with strong engineering experience gained within a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and attend breakdowns as required.

  • Diagnose and repair faults quickly to minimise production downtime.

  • Accurately record all work completed, reporting any follow-up actions required.

  • Support continuous improvement activities and machine performance enhancements.

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, food safety, and hygiene standards at all times.

  • Supervise contractors and ensure adherence to site rules and safety protocols.

  • Provide training and support to other team members where necessary.

  • Work under KPI-driven targets to maximise operational performance and efficiency.


Key Requirements

  • Time-served engineer (Mechanical or Electrical bias) qualified to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.

  • Ideally educated to HNC level (or equivalent) – desirable but not essential.

  • Previous experience in a high-speed, high-volume manufacturing environment.

  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills under production pressures.

  • Experience with PLC control systems, fault finding on servo drives, RS networks (including Ethernet and DeviceNet).

  • Familiarity with AB Powerflex AC Inverters.

  • Working knowledge of TPM, 5S, and CMMS systems is an advantage.

  • 18th Edition certification preferred for candidates with electrical bias.

  • Good IT literacy and comfortable using maintenance software.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.


What’s on Offer

  • Starting salary: £41,714, rising to £43,942 after a successful 3-month review, and up to £45,034 based on performance and capability.

  • Overtime paid at 1.25x hourly rate.

  • 24 days holiday per year, inclusive of bank holidays (pro-rata based on start date).
